Mission |
In
July and August 1998, the U.S. Southern Command
simulated a United Nations-style peacekeeping operation, "in
order to enhance regional cooperation and trust, reinforce staff functions
and procedures in peacekeeping operations, and focus on interoperability
for the coalition battalion staff."
The
exercise sought to reinforce the U.S. participants' abilities to
carry out the following "mission essential tasks":
- Collect
information on strategic situation, geography, medical risks,
climate, and significant hazards
- Provide
strategic direction to theater forces
- Provide
security for theater forces and means
- Foster
alliance and regional relations and security arrangements
- Coordinate
disaster relief
- Coordinate
interagency activities
- Support
peacekeeping
- Conduct
peace enforcement
