Definitions

Fuerzas Aliadas Rivervine is a joint military operation between the United States and a host country. Participating countries for Fuerzas Aliadas Rivervine 97 include Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the United States. There were two different host countries during the operation which lasted from July 11-23, 1997; both Honduras and El Salvador took part in these maneuvers.

Honduras-- Gulf of Fonseca
The operation in Honduras was a counternarcotics military action. It was designed to counter drug trafficking in the rivers, oceans, and other waterways. Both countries (the United States and Honduras) hope to find ways of combating drugtraffickers through the use of communication, maintaining arms, and navigation.

El Salvador-- La Unión
The joint maneuver between El Salvador and the United States in the port of La Unión, El Salvador is designed to stop contraband, but also to practice operational procedures for first aid relief during natural disasters. The countries will become more familiar in maintaining and repairing boats, searching for ships, and first aid procedures.
