IMET: Peru
The following description of the IMET program for Peru comes from the U.S. State Department's April 2002 FY2003 Congressional Budget Justification for Foreign Operations:1

International Military Education and Training (IMET) funds programs to improve military professionalism and capabilities by providing military and civilian defense professional training that reinforces the principle of civilian rule. Recent steps taken by Peru to depoliticize the armed forces will increase the effectiveness of such programs.
