Exercise: UNITAS

Description:

UNITAS is a yearly, multinational naval deployment exercise. Every year since 1960, several United States Navy vessels have circumnavigated the South American continent, participating in maneuvers with local navies. This circumnavigation alternates each year between clockwise and counterclockwise.

UNITAS is carried out under the direction of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, sponsored by the U.S. Southern Command, and supported by the Atlantic Fleet.


UNITAS 43 - July 31-October 18, 2002 (clockwise circumnavigation):4

Exercise type Foreign Military Interaction Field Training Exercise (FMI FTX).

"Foreign Military Interaction" or "multinational" exercises are carried out jointly with other militaries, normally several at a time.

A "Field Training" exercise (FTX) simulates actual operations "in the field," focusing more on improvement of skills than on the making of command decisions.

Participating countries Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela; Canada, Great Britain, and the Netherlands will participate in the exercise's first phase near Puerto Rico.

  • CJCS-directed, SOUTHCOM-scheduled, multi-phase, multinational naval engagement exercise
  • Executive agent: Maritime Phases - COMUSNAVSO, Riverrine Phases - COMMARFORSOUTH
  • Scenario focused, regional engagement w/SOAM Navies
Purpose Enhance operational readiness and interoperability among U.S. and South American forces while promoting hemisphere coalition maritime strategy.
