Statement
of Support from U.S. NGOs for Congreso Nacional de Paz y País,
May 9, 2002
We
wish to express our support for the efforts of civil society representatives
from all over Colombia who are organizing the National Congress for Peace
and Country on May 9 to 11th. As U.S. nongovernmental and religious organizations
following Colombian issues, we are deeply concerned over the escalating
violence in your country. We condemn violations of human rights and international
humanitarian law by all armed actors. We were saddened by the breakdown
of the peace talks in February, and believe that all sides must try to pull
back from the brink of senseless violence. Ultimately, the only solution
is a negotiated settlement for a true and lasting peace. The answer to how
you can arrive at such peace must be sought in the minds and hearts of all
Colombians. We are encouraged by the tenacious and spirited search for peace
by Colombian civil society organizations, and we wish for a successful and
broadly supported National Congress for Peace and Country.
