Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Marc Grossman will head a delegation to Colombia August 13-14, 2002 to underscore U.S. cooperation in the fight against narcotics trafficking and counterterrorism, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote socio-economic development in Colombia. The delegation will include Director of Andean Affairs in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs Phil Chicola, and United States Southern Command Deputy Commander in Chief Major General Gary D. Speer.

Under Secretary Grossman and members of his delegation will meet with President Alvaro Uribe Velez, senior Colombian Government officials, and representatives from the business community and civil society.

Under Secretary Grossman will hold a press conference for Colombian and international media on Wednesday, August 14 at 11 o'clock in the Conference Room at Casa de Nariño. Journalists interested in attending should contact the Presidential Press Secretary's Office.

Marc Grossman was sworn in as Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs on March 26, 2001. He has been a career Foreign Service Officer since 1976. He was Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of Human Resources from June 2000 to February 2001, and Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs from August 1997 to May 2000. From November 1994 to June 1997, he served as U.S. Ambassador to Turkey. His last visit to Colombia was in February 2002.
