STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton welcomes the results of the Meeting of South American Presidents in Brasilia on August 31 - September 1. This historic event, convened by President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, underscores the region's strong commitment to expand economic integration, strengthen democracy, and reduce the threats caused by illicit drug trafficking in the hemisphere.

President Clinton applauds the South American Presidents' declaration of support for the peace process in Colombia and their endorsement of President Pastrana's courageous plan to address the complex, inter-related,economic, social, and political challenges that Colombia faces.
